Let’s Get You HAPPY!

Repeat after me, there is NO point to anything you are doing if you are unhappy. There is also NO point in TRYING to do important things while you are unhappy. Soo…let’s get you happier Alpha. 

This is a DO YOUR HOMEWORK MONTH! Each Shortcut will have something for you to do. Do that. Then write and share some of that happiness. It’s contagious, so email a boatload of it to me down under.

Just Go Be Somewhere Else

This one is easy. Just go be somewhere else. It’s awesome if you can go be somewhere else while doing something NORMAL. Then you’ll realize how much the location alone changes the feel of your plain old, boring task.

Do not let your head get involved.

Can you take your laptop outside for 30 minutes to work? Can you read your emails on your phone strolling through a mall?  Can you put gas in your car and drive 90 mins away and sit in a totally NEW Starbucks? Decide to shop in the same grocery store on the OTHER side of town??

Just go be somewhere else.

Humans have a need for novelty and variety. You can control this need and keep it away from things you want to stay stable (like a monogamous relationship) by making sure you meet the need in small ways elsewhere.  

Think of dogs. Just having a new smell to smell, excites them. We aren’t that far off! One of my favorite Alphas uses her lunch break to tour different museums wherever she is working. She posts the photos online. It’s a reason to go somewhere other than where you usually are. Even if you don’t LIKE what you find in your different spot, it gives you things to think, talk and post about, right??


The Truth About Vacations

Here is comes. Mostly, you don’t need to go to exotic, far away locations. You can get most of the same “juice” by heading to a neighboring town. I’ve been to 25 countries and counting and what do I do in all of them? Find a place to eat that looks interesting, find a local grocery store to see the differences from home, walk around looking at things that aren’t where I live and take pictures.

You can do those things anywhere. I recommend developing the ability to go a small distance away and dive into the appreciation of what’s new. In most places, 90 mins to 2 hours away will get you something pretty neat. 

Do Not Restrict Your “Go Somewhere Else” Thinking Only to Trips! 

I cut veggies in the living room sometimes so I can be near the fireplace. I often go sit inside my car in a parking lot to work undisturbed. Back when I still practiced law, I’d drive to a favorite shop. Do the work I was procrastinating and then earn my shopping trip inside. And, I’d give myself a very tiny impulse buying budget $7-20.  Why? To engage the part of me that can attract amazing deals out of nowhere!

What does all of this has to do with happiness? 

Breaking routine feels good. Noticing different things feels good. Again, why? Because your mind goes “to sleep” inside of your day to day life. It has all of the dangers and challenges figured out, so you are left on autopilot. If your autopilot setting is only “kinda happy”, it will be very hard to uplevel to very happy. 

When you go to new places, your mind has to pay attention. It has to show up and you’ll feel that. Make your mind show up so you FEEL the happy experience of something different.

P.S.I moved to Australia! Yep. That counts for a new location. LOL. Too much new triggered stress for me. So be mindful that you don’t “overdo” it. If you train yourself to appreciate just 2 cookies as your whole treat, instead of 4, you need “less” newness to satiate yourself.  MicroNew is Good for You!
